A system that operates adequately under ordinary load may fail under a multiple of it, and the failure tends to arrive at the moment of greatest consequence: the sale, the launch, the campaign that succeeded. This service concerns the identification of that failure point in advance of the event that would otherwise expose it.

The system is subjected to realistic load; the points at which it yields — a database that saturates, a service that does not scale, an integration that times out — are located and reinforced. Where appropriate, routing is arranged so that, under extreme load, non-essential functions degrade in a controlled manner rather than propagating failure through the whole.

The service applies ahead of any predictable and substantial increase in demand — a seasonal peak, a launch, a marketing campaign.

Its limit is inherent to the subject: the failure point can be raised and the system made more resilient, but a surge cannot be guaranteed to pass without event. What can be established is a materially reduced probability of failure and, where response is also engaged, personnel already positioned within the system should the reinforced point nonetheless be reached.
